How the Amsterdam drug scene changed 1975 - 2010

John-Peter Kools talks about the history of drugs on one of Amsterdam’s oldest streets (Zeedijk). He talks about the change on how the government approached drugs on the street starting with ineffective tough policing and ending up with a policy which encouraged economic development in the area, tailored drug services such as consumption rooms and restrictive policing.

Tripping at the Anne Frank house

This story is not of the best or worst time I’ve tripped and has nothing to do with taking a lot of drugs, or gaining a life lesson. In fact, I probably learned very little from this ordeal. Young, dumb, and full of cum – the only way to describe myself backpacking through Europe with several friends. We were typical loud Americans, drinking and getting ourselves into trouble in every country we went to. Four countries and a week into our journey, we arrive at the stoner Disney World… Amsterdam.

Amsterdam tourism worries

The Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC) has criticised the government’s plan that aims to ban foreigners from coffee-shops on grounds of the negative effect that the measure can have for tourism. According to this agency coffee-shops and soft drugs is the main reason why at least 7% of people visit the city. The agency has affirmed that if the law “transpires that fewer tourists visit the Netherlands it will be a cause of great regret for us”.

My first cannabis experience

My first experience of cannabis was certainly not conventional and due to the nature of the experience my memory is particularly vague, however, I’ll do my best to recall what happened.

Texan cops in Amsterdam

Once years ago I went to Amsterdam on my own for a week, I wanted to see how I would cope with being alone in a foreign city before I embarked on an extended period of travel. I wanted to see whether I could make friends and feel relaxed, I also love smoking weed so chose Amsterdam as the best place to test my social skills.
