Gianfranco Fini: Nice People Take Drugs

This card is one of a deck produced by Release to highlight politicians’ hypocrisy towards drug use.
Gianfrano Fini who is current President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and is a member of the centre-right party People of Freedom was deputy Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006.
Fini’s stance on drug use is typical of the hypocritical nature in which drugs are treated by the political class. Despite the fact Fini has said that “once I was stoned for two days in Jamaica with some friends” he has been responsible for introducing strict drug laws in Italy. The Fini-Giovanardi Act abolishes any distinction between soft drugs and hard drugs and the cultivation of a single marijuana plant is punished by a one to six year jail sentence. In 1999 he also asked for forced hospitilisation of drug users, with no distinction between the drugs being used. Fortunately for him Jamaica does not have the same regressive drug laws.
