Letter calls for organisations to take responsibility for Maksim Popov

More than 100 Human Rights and HIV/AIDS organisations have supported a letter calling for the organisations that funded the activities that lead to the incarceration of Uzbek harm reduction activist Maksim Popov to take all possible steps to seek his release from prison.
Mr Popov received a seven-year sentence after IZIS, the organisation that he headed, released a publication called Healthy Lifestyles. Teacher’s Guide XXI, which was aimed at curbing Uzbekistan’s HIV epidemic. IZIS was funded by USAID, UNICEF, UNAIDS, the Global Fund, the U.N. Development Programme, and the Department for International Development (UK). However since his incarceration these organisations have made little or no effort to resolve the situation and Maksim Popov remains in prison.
If you would like to get involved with the campaign to release Maksim Popov please contact releasepopov@gmail.com.
