Mexican President Opens Debate over Drug Legalization due to Country's High Murder Rate

The Mexican President Felipe Calderon said today that he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs following the announcement that there have been more than 28,000 drug-related deaths in Mexico since 2006. “It’s a fundamental debate in which I think, first of all, you must allow a democratic plurality (of opinions),” said Calderon.

Last Saturday the Million Marijuana March took place in Warsaw, Poland. A few people were caught in possesion of drugs during the demonstration and taken to the nearby police station.

After the March some protesters went to the station, asking the police to release their friends.

A worldwide march for cannabis liberalisation will take place on May 8th 2010. In Latin America the march will be held in cities in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Brazil.

California votes to legalise marijuana

California has taken a further step towards the legalisation of marijuana for recreational use when drafting a bill that will be part of the legislative elections of November 2010. The initiative sums up to the already known legal use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, where California was one of the pioneering states.

Does Drug Testing Influence Drug Choice?

Several years ago, a five-year study into drug use among American military recruits prior to their enlistment showed that 75% of recruits regularly consumed alcohol prior to enlistment and that 26% drank “heavily”. Half of the recruits were tobacco smokers, and 1/3 of them had used “illicit” drugs.

Another set of research conducted by the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences reported that lower ranking military personal are far more likely to drink and consume drugs.

Cannabis Cafe opens in Portland

The United States' first marijuana cafe opened its doors for the first time late last week in Portland, Oregon. It is considered as an early test of the Obama administration's move to relax policing of medical use of the drug.

The news made headlines this week as the Cannabis Cafe is the first to give certified medical marijuana users a place to get hold of the drug and smoke it - as long as they are out of public view - despite a federal ban, Reuters reports.
