Methadone treatment

Advocacy web site blocked by Russian Government

Russia has reaffirmed its continued support for an unscientific drug policy by blocking the Andrey Rylkov foundation website. The foundation advocates a more humane and scientific approach to helping drug users such as the use of methadone substitution therapy. The Russian government with its known policy of not embracing a humane drug policy have therefore blocked the Andrey Rylkov foundations web site.

Death by drug policy

When Anthrax is mentioned in the news it is normally in connection with a supposed terrorist plot. Last December though, an outbreak of the disease in Scotland was linked to a contaminated supply of heroin.

In total, it was estimated that the infection claimed 14 lives with approximately 119 other confirmed cases. Although the majority of those infected were from the Glasgow area, cases were also reported as far south as Kent and there was even one infection as far away as Germany.

Hanoi opens first methadone clinic

After successful pilot schemes endorsed by the UN, Vietnam is going ahead with methadone treatment centres as a tool to combat crime and the spread of Hepatitis C and HIV/Aids. Hanoi this week inaugurated its first methadone treatment centre and five more are planned in the city. The new centre makes Hanoi the third Vietnamese city to now have Methadone treatment facilities after two successful pilot schemes were carried out in the heroin and aids hotspots of Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong.
