Mexico City ready for marijuana march

A worldwide march for cannabis liberalisation will take place on May 8th 2010. In Latin America the march will be held in cities in Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and Brazil.

One of the cities where the march has taken place during since 2001 is Mexico City. The main organisations supporting the march are the Mexican Association for Cannabis Studies (AMECA) and the Collective for a Comprehensive Policy to Drugs (CuPIHD) aim to promote changes in the regulation of current policy of drug war which has left 22,743 deaths in three years, according to official figures from the Federal Government.

The organisers emphasise the contradiction between Mexico’s current policy towards cannabis and the United States. While Mexicans are experiencing one of the largest wave of violence with murders everyday due to disputes between drug traffickers especially on the northern border, the United States are moving towards a more tolerant marijuana policy. The organisers advocate the need for studies on the impact of illegal substance use in Mexican society as there is no study that shows damage from cannabis.

The rally will be held for the first time in the ‘Plaza de la Constitución’, better known as the ‘Zócalo’, the main meeting place in Mexico City and aims to bring together more than two thousand people.
