Uzbek president’s daughter wants to help jailed AIDS activist Maksim Popov

Uznews.net – The Uzbek president’s daughter Gulnara Karimova, who is Uzbekistan’s ambassador in Geneva and in Madrid, attended the Cinema Against AIDS event at the Cannes Film Festival on 20 May after she promised amfAR which organised the event to help sort out the case of jailed anti-AIDS activist Maksim Popov.
The Reporters Without Borders’ letter sent on 19 May to amfAR about its dealings with spokeswoman for the brutal Uzbek regime Gulnara Karimova produced results.
In response to the media rights group’s demands that Karimova should condemn the conviction of Maksim Popov and 11 journalists in Uzbekistan or leave the event in Cannes, amfAR Executive Director Kevin Robert Frost said that Karimova had agreed “to take steps to clarify the situation and to work with amfAR on the matter," AFP reported.
amfAR listed Karimova as co-chair of the event. This is where amfAR’s involvement in the fate of Popov, 27, who was jailed for seven years for fighting HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan, ends.
The organisation left Uznews.net’s questions about the timetable for the release of Popov and 11 jailed journalists without answers.
