A question of Morality
Often times I hear people arguing for the prohibition of drugs on the grounds of morality. I am not refering to anyone organization or individual, it just seems that morality is a driving factor for those supporting prohibition.
I admit that I am making a bit of a generalization yet I think it is in an important issue to address. Often times their arguments will make some kind of claim that drug legalization would send the wrong message to kids.
I disagree with this argument because I would call on people to examine what kind of message the war on drugs has on kids.
What kind of message does it send to young people when the United States has less than 5% of the world's population yet, about 25% of the world's prison population?
What kind of message does it send to young peoeple when we arrest millions of people for nonviolent drug offenders?
What kind of message does it send to young people when we deny students financial aid based on a drug conviction?
This seems to send a very negative message to children about American drug policy. Another common prohibitionist argument with regard to somesense of morality is that the government needs to protect its citizens. Although I do generally speaking do agree with this rather vague idea it is certainly not true.
If the government really cared about protecting its citizens would we have advertisments glamorizing the use of dangerous legal drugs such as nicotine and alcohol?
If the government really cared about safety would they allow doctors to prescribe high power opiates such as OxyContin?
If the gorvernment was interested in safety then would the government create a black market for drugs in which violence is the norm?
Another somewhat common morality comment is that it is immoral to take drugs. All though this depends on what immoral and moral means on the individual it is important to consider what a drug is. A drug is understood as any chemical which changes the behavior or the way your brain functions. Keep in mind that we have legal drugs such as Vicodin, Percocets, etc. and illegal drugs such as: marijiauana, cocaine, and LSD. If someone makes that argument then they would have to consider coffee, motrin takers, and all medicaiton takers to be immortal. Keep in mind that all these people take drugs, granted legal drugs but they are still drugs.
