Drug war reality tour
A film produced by the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU).
Kensington, Pennsylvania was rich industrial city in the USA. After losing most of its textile and manufacturing jobs in the 1980s, the area became run down, with poor housing, poverty, unemployment and lack of hope blighting the urban landscape. Into the vaccuum came problematic drug use on a mass scale. The KWRU began running tours of the city, taking bus-loads of tourists through the open-drug markets and street injecting scenes. They explain that the drug trade provides people here with both cash and status; at the same time, it occupies their attentions and prevents the political organization necessary for change.
