Naloxone Kits available for perscription
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has licensed a prescription naloxone kit that individuals can take home. Prenoxad is the world’s first licensed naloxone product for use by non-healthcare individuals in a community setting and has been granted a license in the UK by the MHRA. From the 3rd of May 2013 GP’s will be able to prescribe Prenoxad to ‘suitably trained’ drug users and non-healthcare workers.
Richard de Souza, the Chief Executive Officer of Martindale Pharma (The manufactures of Prenoxad) said that “We are pleased to have launched the world's first licensed emergency treatment for acute opioid related overdose. More than 1,000 deaths occur each year in the UK as a result of opiate related overdoses and the introduction of Prenoxad Injection marks an important advance in supporting recovery programmes designed to reduce the number of avoidable deaths."
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist which can reverse respiratory suppression from heroin overdoses. Research by Dr. Phillp Coffin and Professor Sea Sullivan has indicated through a mathematical model that for every 164 naloxone kits given out 1 life could be saved and is a cost-effective way at preventing deaths from overdoses. The tireless work of Stephen Malloy, the former National Coordinator and training lead for the Scottish ‘take home naloxone’ programme and others have helped increase the availability of prescription naloxone kits and therefore helped save many more lives.
