TalkingDrugs Updates from Eastern Europe & Central Asia [August 2019]

1. August 31 – International Overdose Awareness Day: the “Drugmap” project have published a first aid manual for what to do if you witness an overdose. DUNews, a documentary film studio, presented a new video on overdose prevention.

 

2. Activists from Kazakhstan Harm Reduction Network held a memorial for people who have died as a result of overdose. More information and photos are available here (Rus). 

 

3. Project media group released the results of an analysis of the Russian darknet drug market. Which drugs are most popular? How do prices for drugs vary across regions in Russia? Further materials on Russian darknet trade sites is available here (Rus).

 

4. According to Levada Centre, 66 per cent of Russian people consider the planting of drugs into people’s possession to be a common practice of Russian police. More about this topic can be found in the following video blog: “News of the Superstate” by Radio Liberty (Rus).

 

5. Official overdose statistics in Russia for 2018 were published by the Russian state anti-narcotic committee. Most overdose cases take place in Saint-Petersburg (66,1 per 100 thousand people), Omsk (52,7) and Kemerovo (24) regions and in Moscow (24 cases per 100 thousand people), The Village reports.  

 

6. “The Magic Bracelet” – Olga Belyaeva, EHRA’s Advocacy Manager, shares her story of harm reduction awareness among people who use drugs and practical tips of how to use naloxone to save lives. Read more here (Eng).

 

7. AFEW International announced EECA INTERACT 2019 — the first workshop for academics and practitioners on HIV, Hepatitis C and Tuberculosis in EECA regions. The workshop will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on November 18-19, 2019. Read more here (Eng).
